In Memoriam: Ned Goodman, Former CSE Vice Chair

The Canadian Securities Exchange is saddened to learn of the passing of Ned Goodman at age 85.

Mr. Goodman, a true Bay Street legend, was one of the most celebrated financiers and investment professionals in Canadian history. He was also recognized for his significant philanthropic efforts.

Mr. Goodman played an important role in the growth of the Canadian Securities Exchange. In 2013, his firm Dundee Corporation made a strategic investment in CNSX Markets Inc., which operates the CSE, and Mr. Goodman became Vice Chair. In that role, he publicly championed the CSE as the ideal destination for entrepreneurs seeking to access the capital markets.

Mr. Goodman was a firm believer in the CSE’s vision, saying that its low-cost, streamlined structure was ideal for emerging companies. He believed that bank-owned exchanges did not understand the needs of entrepreneurs and were too expensive and burdensome. As someone who helped to start many successful junior companies, most notably in the mining sector, he understood the value of the CSE’s approach to listings as well as anyone.

“As a lifelong entrepreneur I have no problem encouraging and inviting the management and boards of entrepreneurial Canadian public companies to consider the benefits of a (CSE) listing,” he said at the time of Dundee’s investment.

In the subsequent years, he repeatedly promoted the benefits of the CSE to the public. He appeared on Business News Network, championing the Exchange in conversations with anchor Howard Green and others. He did similar work behind the scenes, helping to steer CEOs of entrepreneurial companies to the CSE when they sought his guidance.

The CSE has grown significantly since the Dundee investment in 2013, as more and more entrepreneurs have come to recognize its benefits. The Exchange had slightly more than 200 listings at the time of the Dundee investment; today, there are more than 800.

Richard Carleton, CEO of the CSE, called Mr. Goodman a “great champion” for the Exchange.

“I cannot overstate the importance of getting such a strong endorsement from a legend like Ned Goodman,” Mr. Carleton said. “His support played a pivotal role in the CSE’s outsized growth over the last nine years. I and the rest of the CSE team are privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him.”

The CSE team offers its deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time.
